About this service
What Is Carotid Ultrasound ?
- A Carotid Ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that uses sound waves to evaluate blood flow in the carotid arteries — the major arteries in the neck that supply blood to the brain.
- This test helps detect narrowing (stenosis), plaque buildup, or blockages that may increase the risk of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). It is often recommended for patients with risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking history, or a prior stroke.
- By identifying circulation problems early, a carotid ultrasound helps guide preventive treatment and reduce the risk of serious complications.
What to expect
The test usually takes about 20 minutes. A small ultrasound probe is gently moved over the neck with gel to capture images of blood flow. There is no radiation, no needles, and the procedure is painless.
