Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI)
Stent placement after balloon angioplasty widens a narrowed coronary artery.
A coronary stent helps keep the artery open and restore healthy blood flow
About this service
What Is Percutaneous Coronary Intervention?
- Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), commonly known as coronary angioplasty with stent placement, is a minimally invasive procedure used to open blocked or severely narrowed coronary arteries.
- During the procedure, a small balloon attached to a thin catheter is guided to the site of the blockage. The balloon is gently inflated to widen the artery and restore blood flow. In most cases, a small flexible wire mesh tube called a stent is placed inside the artery to help keep it open permanently.
- PCI improves blood flow to the heart muscle, relieves chest pain (angina), and may reduce heart damage during or after a heart attack. It is often performed immediately following a diagnostic cardiac catheterization when a significant blockage is found.
What to expect
The procedure is performed in a hospital catheterization laboratory under local anesthesia and mild sedation. Most patients recover quickly and return home the same day, depending on their condition.
